Not another pivot. More of a refocusing. I’ve been in recovery ever since I broke my rib back in November. Hitting the sand dunes with little to no training made some great memories, to say the least.
The past five months have been a rough patch. I’ve been exploring independent music, trying to help artists get discovered by broadcasting my own station. Even though I’ve gained some interest, I also discovered a few harsh truths about independent artists. Not all of them actually care about being independent. Even with the recurring testimonies from established artists warning newcomers to stay independent because labels will take advantage of them, these warnings fall on deaf ears. The majority of people only get into the art to become another lever in the machine. Update the algo. Stream the Spotify. Watch the YouTube. Share the page. Instead of building something intimate and personal, they just chase the streams. It’s this acceptance that we must bow to the middleman instead of building something completely independent of the establishment. Some fight for freedom. Others just want more space in the cage, more leash on the chain.
Anyway, this was supposed to be about the refocusing of SCN. As I set out to help others break free from the system, I started seeing the reality of what I was getting into. Not everyone wants to be free. Not everyone wants to build each other up. And if you aren’t already in the network, you’re just another outsider.
The bitter truth? I have to keep building something that speaks to the mind focused on freedom – a mind that doesn’t settle for another chip off the old BlackRock, another bought-and-paid-for propaganda spoke, another link in the long chain binding us to the same perpetual nightmare.
